Elsewhere, Chess Kenya has announced final plans to send a team to next week’s World Cadets Chess Championships in Italy

Zuri Kaloki pulled another surprise result in the ongoing World Youth Chess Championships in Brazil.

The 14-year-old Brookside student upset Colombia’s Luna Monsalve, who at 1815, is one of the highest players in round seven of the world event.

She will play on board 15 in the eighth round where she is scheduled to meet Latvia’s Maklakova Naomi, who is also rated highly at 1893.

In the same category, Natalie Watitu also won her match after she beat Bolivian Justiniano Flores Fernanda.

It was Watitu’s second point and she is scheduled to play Brazilian Biazon Heloise De Oliveira.

Valma Njoki beat fellow Kenyan Lisa Wanjiru in another match in the seventh round.

In the boys under-14 category, Wesley Gitau made a winning move against fellow Kenyan Francis Njenga, outplaying him from the opening move.

Jabu Kariuki held his ground to secure a draw against Brazil’s De Bortollo Tiago Augusto, rated 1634.

Hope Muthoni could not match Brazilian Trentini Agata Papini, who won her seventh round match.

Mathenge Gichuga secured a solid half-point with a draw against Brazilian Navaro Gustavo, rated 1692, showing his resilience on the board.

Simiyu Daniel Baraka was not so lucky against Taiwan’s Ko Yu Cheng, who downed him in another 16 fixture.

Elsewhere, Chess Kenya has announced final plans to send a team to next week’s World Cadets Chess Championships in Italy.

Kenya will be represented by 35 players in the 13 days championships that will bring together 49 countries from all over the world.

Victoria Nyawira Mugo will represent the country in the under-8 category, where she is the only participant from Kenya.

The under-8 boys category has six players including: Adriel Baraka, Zayn Favour, Prince Yadiel Baraka, Kingsley Nzioki, Ethan Nderitu, and Ethan Njama.

Four girls will take part in the under-10 category and include: Ella Kendi, Wanjiru, Suzzane Imani Munyendo, and Zawadi Muthoni Mugo.

The boys under-10 category has five players among them; Kayden Sankau Oloitiptip, Jayden Kiai, Dylan Wema, Jayden Kihuria, and Giovanni Otieno.

Jewel Hawi Odhiambo, Zeruaih Rassoa, Rochella Maria Amor, Olive Wanjiru, Elie Wangechi and Jasmine Malaika are the girls under-12 representatives.

The boys under-12 representatives are: Jadon Dukes, Geoffrey Gitonga, Jibril Gichugu, David Mutane, Kelly Sosi, Victor Muiru, Kyle Njiru, Ethan Liam, Aideen Wainaina, Luke Nganga, Fidel Kingsley and Lesan Semon.
